Milk from India's first camel milk microdairy

Camel Charisma and local Raika camel pastoralists are trialling production of camel milk at the Kumbhalgarh Camel Dairy at the LPPS Camel Conservation Centre near Ranakpur, Rajasthan. The market for camel milk is developing worldwide as its unique properties are increasingly recognised by health-conscious consumers.

An experienced team

LPPS set up its first dairy project near Jaisalmer in 2008, supplying camel milk locally, mostly for diabetes patients. We work with leading national and international camel dairy experts and local camel breeders and herders to ensure the production of safe and hygienic camel milk products.

India's first microdairy

In 2015, we set up our new microdairy project, the Kumbhalgarh Camel Dairy, using milk from areas where the camels graze on plants traditionally recognised as having medicinal properties. The milk is collected daily from registered and monitored herds; as soon as it arrives in the dairy it is pasteurised then frozen for transportation to customers in Delhi and metros.

Buying and keeping milk

Contact us to enquire about buying camel milk. Depending on your location, we will work out a way of  getting the milk to you. Camel milk may be kept frozen at below -7C for up to a year. It is then thawed in a refrigerator. After thawing, it must be kept refrigerated and consumed within 5 days and must not be refrozen.

Camel milk for autism and diabetes

Since our first production, we have been supplying camel milk for autism and diabetes. There is growing evidence from medical research that camel milk can benefit autistic children and diabetic patients.

Raw, pasteurised, powdered?

Fresh, raw milk cannot safely be transported in India because of the high risk of bacteria and pathogens developing in raw milk. The Raika camel pastoralists traditionally drink raw milk whilst it is very fresh, which is the safest way to consume it.

Pasteurisation makes milk safe and increases its keeping quality.  According to studies by the Central Veterinary Research Laboratory in Dubai, proper pasteurisation retains nearly all the nutrients and health benefits of raw camel milk. All Camel Charisma camel milk is pasteurised and frozen before transportation.

Powdered milk (which can be reconstituted as milk or used in the manufacture of products such as chocolate) is convenient and easy to transport, and is even imported from other countries. But in the drying process it can lose nutrients, so it may not have the same qualities as raw or pasteurised milk.

Could Indian camel milk be the best in the world?

Camel milk sold in the US, UAE and other countries is mostly from commercial farms where camels have a more limited diet, mostly grazing on grass or being fed on alfafa and other fodder crops. The unique flora of India's Thar desert regions includes plants long used in traditional medicine and increasingly recognised by modern medical science as having therapeutic effects. More research is needed, but it is possible that the vegetation found in the Thar and the Aravalli Hills may be producing some of the best and healthiest camel milk in the world.
